Using Animation in Diagrammatic Theorem Proving
نویسندگان
چکیده
Diagrams have many uses in mathematics, one of the most ambitious of which is as a form of proof. The domain we consider is real analysis, where quanti cation issues are subtle but crucial. Computers o er new possibilities in diagrammatic reasoning, one of which is animation. Here we develop animated rules as a solution to problems of quanti cation. We show a simple application of this to constraint diagrams, and also how it can deal with the more complex questions of quanti cation and generalisation in diagrams that use more speci c representations. This allows us to tackle diÆcult theorems that previously could only be proved algebraically.

Using Diagrammatic Reasoning for Theorem Proving in a Continuous Domain
This project looks at using diagrammatic reasoning to prove mathematical theorems. The work is motivated by a need for theorem provers whose reasoning is readily intelligible to human beings. It should also have practical applications in mathematics teaching. We focus on the continuous domain of analysis a geometric subject, but one which is taught using a dry algebraic formalism which many stu...
متن کاملAn Experimental Comparison of Diagrammatic and Algebraic Logics
We have developed a diagrammatic logic for theorem proving, focusing on the domain of metric-space analysis (a geometric domain, but traditionally taught using a dry algebraic formalism). To evaluate its pragmatic value, pilot experiments were conducted using this logic implemented in an interactive theorem prover to teach undergraduate students (and comparing performance against an equivalent ...
متن کاملCombining Dynamic Geometry, Automated Geometry Theorem Proving and Diagrammatic Proofs
This paper outlines Geometry Explorer, a prototype system that allows users to create Euclidean geometry constructions using a dynamic geometry interface, specify conjectures about them and then use a full-angle method prover to automatically produce diagram independent, human-readable proofs to theorems. Our system can then automatically generate novel diagrammatic proofs of the forward-chaini...
متن کاملA short introduction to two approaches in formal verification of security protocols: model checking and theorem proving
In this paper, we shortly review two formal approaches in verification of security protocols; model checking and theorem proving. Model checking is based on studying the behavior of protocols via generating all different behaviors of a protocol and checking whether the desired goals are satisfied in all instances or not. We investigate Scyther operational semantics as n example of this...
متن کاملOn Automating Diagrammatic Proofs of Arithmetic Arguments
Theorems in automated theorem proving are usually proved by formal logical proofs. However, there is a subset of problems which humans can prove by the use of geometric operations on diagrams, so called diagrammatic proofs. Insight is often more clearly perceived in these proofs than in the corresponding algebraic proofs; they capture an intuitive notion of truthfulness that humans find easy to...
